An n8n workflow, node by node

n8n runs a chain of nodes. A webhook starts it, an IF node picks a branch, and only one destination runs. Drag the amount across $100.

Drag the amount across $100, then run it. The dimmed branch will not run.

{ "amount": 240 }

Step 1 of 5

  1. 1

    Webhook receives the order

    Some other system POSTs JSON. That payload is the input to every later node.

    { "amount": 240 }

  2. 2

    IF amount is over the threshold

    The node tests amount > 100. It does not send anything itself.

    240 > 100 → true

  3. 3

    True: post to Slack

    This node runs only when the test is true.

    Post: New order for $240.

  4. 4

    False: email the team

    This node runs only when the test is false. Slack stays quiet.

    Not this time. The test was true.

  5. 5

    Record where it went

    An execution is one path through the nodes, not both.

    Sent to Slack #sales.

Tools and technologies

Webhook-driven automation with branching is a category — n8n is one open-source option.

Not tied to one language — use these names when you search docs or design a system.
